Essential Oils to Boost Immune Function

The first line of defense toward being infected by a virus is always frequent and thorough hand washing. Essential oils can be an added line of defense toward infection. There are various essential oils that have antibacterial and antiviral properties. The best way of using essential oils for this purpose is through direct inhalation, steaming or diffusing. Through inhalation the oils enter the body through the respiratory system where they are most needed to kill the virus and prevent it from further invading the body.

When using essential oils, less is more. The oils are powerful and can be harmful if used incorrectly. A couple or few drops in a diffuser, or pot of boiling water to steam, is plenty. If inhaling directly from the bottle, inhale gently, just enough to smell the fragrance. Be sure to keep the opening and top of the bottle clean and uncontaminated. When applying oils directly on the skin it is important to dilute them in a carrier oil. Some oil varietals are more gentle than others.

  • Do not use strong essential oils such as cinnamon bark and clove bud without considering the safety implications. These are extreme skin irritants, and should not be used during pregnancy or nursing, with any "heat" signs, or cardiovascular issues.

  • Take caution when using essential oil recipes you find online. It is impossible to give blanket advice as every oil is different. Many are contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and for small children and babies.

  • Some oils, like Tea Tree, is toxic for dogs and cats.

  • Do not spray your own blend in an enclosed public space. Be considerate of others, you are not aware of others health conditions.

Using high quality, unadulterated and properly stored essential oils is important. I have my own preferred suppliers that I use with patients and in oil blends.
